Profile:
The Natural Heritage Institute (NHI) is a public interest law firm and conservation organization founded in 1989 by a group of experienced conservation lawyers and scientists. NHI's mission is to restore and protect the natural functions that support water-dependent ecosystems and the services they provide to sustain and enrich human life.
NHI assists in nearly all stages of water management decision-making and approaches the decisions from an integrated systems perspective. Waterways are integrally related with surface waters, groundwaters, and their adjacent land ecosystems that support natural habitat and human communities. We analyze the flows in these interrelated systems and recommend how flows could be best optimized to serve the various interests that need water. We help to show how changing water management policies to optimize water usage can lead to beneficial impacts as measured in both economic value and in healthy environmental conditions for all its inhabitants.
We provide our expertise through four major practice areas:
1. Policy research and advocacy
2. Scientific research and hydrologic modeling
3. Legal and litigation services
4. Ecosystem/Flow restoration and planning
