Description:

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Under general supervision, performs a variety of responsible data management duties for a large groundwater resources project. The data management specialist will participate in the identification, organization and management of pertinent data and documents and will maintain and update databases to ensure timely, efficient retrieval of information. The data management specialist at this level is in a journey-level mode, well trained in the utilization of relevant geological and/or hydrogeological data, and familiar with QA/QC procedures. Most assignments involve the use of computer software applications (e.g., spreadsheets, databases such as MS Access or Oracle, CAD, ArcGIS, aquifer test analysis, etc.).

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Focus is on data verification/validation - QA/QC of data as it is put into a database (hydrogeologic and geochemistry data).

Performs coordination of laboratory services.

Verifies data fields for accuracy and completeness, contacting field staff for missing/required information, and validating data entries for invalid information.

Perform audit checks on the data already in the database.

Provide control of files and file structure for the Data Acquisition and Reporting Section.

Performs various office tasks requiring the application of basic hydrogeological principles and fundamental theories. Applies available data pertinent to geology, geochemistry and/or hydrogeology, accurately describing and classifying soil and rock samples and understanding various water chemistry test results.

Responsible for the oversight and maintenance management of field chemistry instrumentation, including ensuring supplies are adequate, calibration is current, and all required maintenance is scheduled and performed in a timely manner.

Responsible to ensure that field chemistry equipment maintenance standards are maintained.

May conduct soil, surface water, groundwater, and sediment sampling programs and data collection as part of a field team assignment.

May assist in hydrogeologic report preparation, including preparation of cross sections and compilation of environmental sample analyses.

Performs other responsibilities associated with this position as may be appropriate.

PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

4-year degree in Geology, Geochemistry or Civil Engineering or related sciences and 3-5 years of related work experience. Prior experience as a member of a Quality Assurance / Quality Control team is highly desired.
