Knowledge of Great Basin aquifers would be beneficial.

Duties & Responsibilities:

The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the class.

A primary responsibility of the position will be working with a team to develop and implement well performance and aquifer evaluation testing programs for monitoring and high capacity production wells. Duties include performing pumping test data analysis for fractured carbonate rock and unconsolidated aquifer systems. The candidate should have experience with application of advanced conceptual model solutions and solution software such as AQTESOLV. Knowledge is required of well hydraulics and well field modeling and experience preparing hydrologic analysis reports presenting test data and results.

The Principal Hydrologist will:

Define needs and designs programs for research and scientific hydrologic data collection throughout Nevada and the Colorado river basin states; identify research needs and apply tested methodologies and techniques to design and carry out research programs and test research hypotheses; participate in research and implementation of programs in conjunction with other federal, state and local agencies.

Perform hydrological planning for major well construction and related capital development and/or maintenance programs; research and plans future system and facilities requirements related to the systems of new water supply and artificial recharge wells.

Prepare plans and specifications for the construction of wells and related waterworks engineering projects; researches and identifies project design requirements; conduct computer modeling to determine design requirements and parameters; analyzes field geology and drilling conditions for well design parameters; analyze field hydrology data to determine pumping equipment design requirements and parameters.

Develop, implement and evaluate programs that aid in augmenting and protecting southern Nevada ground water supplies; participates in the design of aquifer storage and recovery programs, including the collection of data to determine feasible storage sites; conduct research and develops programs to expand artificial recharge operations, including the analysis of costs, optimal well designs and other factors; design research and data collection methodologies to evaluate such issues as the effects of water system contaminants, preferential flows of recharged water and recharge/ground water interaction in the aquifers; interpret the results of aquifer test data and directs the design of well facilities.

Oversees and participates in the interpretation of well production/recharge data and the projection of well performance.

Evaluates the applicability of new well designs and hydrologic techniques, reviews and recommends modifications to designs and plans to ensure conformance with requirements and standards and applicable state law and regulation; prepares estimates of project schedule and material costs.

Reviews and coordinates department data collection and storage programs, including the development and modification of databases for maintaining data on ground water and recharged water quality, principal and shallow aquifer water levels and other hydrologic data.
