RTI?s Environment, Health, and Safety Division (EHSD) comprises approximately 100 environmental professionals, including more than 30 staff with expertise in water quality and integrated water resources management. EHSD?s environmental scientists and engineers work closely with RTI?s environmental economists, statisticians, and information technology specialists to provide the interdisciplinary expertise that is needed to solve twenty-first century environmental problems.
RTI's water quality research helps federal, state, and local governments develop and implement strategies to protect water resources by addressing critical national, state, and local environmental issues. To bolster our expertise in water quality science and integrated water resources management, we are seeking candidates who can lead large, complex research projects related to monitoring and managing coastal water quality and ecosystems. This work will involve coordinating and working with expert scientists, regulators, and other stakeholders to collect and share data and research results and apply them towards the sustainable use of coastal resources. It also will require a vision of future opportunities and how RTI can continue to improve world conditions through environmental research.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Technical responsibilities:
The successful applicant must be able to scientifically lead and provide strategic vision for RTI?s projects and developing programs in ecosystem and water resources management, including
? Assessing impacts of chemical and physical stressors on estuarine, marine, aquatic, and terrestrial ecosystems
? Evaluating impacts of development on coastal environments
? Conducting watershed management and water quality studies, assessments, and modeling
? Reviewing and assessing air, water, and ecosystem monitoring programs
? Using models and GIS systems to analyze data and display results
? Applying research results to develop sustainable management strategies for air, water, and land resources.

Management responsibilities:
? Provide leadership for a team of scientists and engineers in EHSD and subcontracting organizations to address water resource and ecosystem management issues, with an initial emphasis on coastal concerns.
? Develop and grow natural resource research programs serving clients here and abroad
? Lead contract and grant proposals, manage large complex accounts and contracts, and identify and build technical capabilities in strategically vital areas.

QUALIFICATIONS:
? A demonstrated ability to plan and direct scientific analysis and modeling relating to evaluating and managing coastal water and ecosystem resources
? A strategic vision of the next ten years of coastal ecosystem and water resources research and the ability to visualize our organization?s role in that effort ?
A PhD in a ecology, water resources, coastal biology, or related field, and scientific stature in that discipline ?
Experience in managing multidisciplinary teams of expert scientists and engineers in research projects with measurable results
? Demonstrated success in developing and sustaining environmental research programs.
? Experience working with DoD installations and research agencies is highly desirable.
