The Monterey Peninsula Water Management District is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Associate Hydrologist; this recruitment will fill one (1) vacancy and create an eligible list for an anticipated future opening. Regional Government Services and its staff are conducting this recruitment for the MPWMD.
This position a variety of tasks including developing and maintaining complex and difficult programs related to managing the Districts surface water resources including the stream flow monitoring program and will design, install and maintain stream flow gauging stations; and to perform a variety of technical tasks relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

Since 1978, The Monterey Peninsula Water Management District has worked diligently to augment the areas water supply.
The districts functions include:
Augmenting the water supply through integrated management of ground and surface water.
Promote water conservation.
Promote water reuse and reclamation of storm and wastewater.
Foster the scenic values, environmental qualities, native vegetation, fish and
wildlife, and recreation on the Monterey Peninsula and in the Carmel River Basin.
The Water Management District serves approximately 112,000 people within the cities of Carmel-by-the-Sea, Del Rey Oaks, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Seaside, Sand City, Monterey Peninsula Airport District, and portions of unincorporated Monterey County including Pebble Beach, Carmel Highlands and Carmel Valley. Our sources of revenue include but are not limited to, property tax, user fees, water connection charges, investments, grants, permit fees and project reimbursements.

ESSENTIAL AND MARGINAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS

Essential Functions:
Design and perform complex hydrologic related research studies; establish methodology and standards; perform data analyses and interpretation relating to surface water quality and quantity; guide technical field staff in data collection, analyses, storage, retrieval, and reporting.
Provide technical support for long-term and interim water supply projects, water rights studies, river erosion and sedimentation processes, fisheries, riparian vegetation, and surface water modeling projects.
Inspect river to identify erosion hazards; perform erosion control and revegetation project design and implementation, including surveying, drafting, and cost estimation; present projects to community groups and prepare permit applications.
Conduct hydrologic analyses of proposed water supply projects including effects on river channel geometry, flood elevations, riparian vegetation, and sediment transport; assist in the preparation of off-site mitigation plans.
Operate, maintain, and repair the Districts ASR Project.
Operate, maintain, and repair stream flow measuring equipment including survey equipment and stream flow measuring gear.
Manage computer database and filing system, compute stream flow records, tabulate rainfall records and prepare technical reports; produce computerized graphics of hydrologic data collected.
Administer contracts for construction projects and hydrologic studies and inspect work activities of contractors; prepare as built drawings.
Attend and participate in professional group meetings; stay abreast of contemporary trends and innovations in the field of surface and ground water resource management and stream flow monitoring.
Hike into remote areas to make inspections, measurements, and observations and to conduct studies.
Operate and maintain the fish counter logging system; assist with fish population surveys and fish rescues, as necessary.
Ensure adherence to safe work practices and procedures.
Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
Estimate time, materials and equipment required for jobs assigned; requisition materials as required.
Serve as District representative on interview panels for other agencies, as necessary.

Typical Qualifications

Five years of increasingly responsible surface water resource management experience.
Education:
Equivalent to a Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in hydrology, geology, environmental sciences, engineering, or a related field.
